Canal enthusiasts have rolled back the years to help a narrowboat ‘float’ through Lichfield for the first time in more than half a century.

Okay, so the vessel might not have quite been afloat, but it was a float at the Lichfield Greenhill Bower.

The narrowboat – designed and built by Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust director Bob Mullarkey – travelled through the city streets on Bank Holiday Monday with the Bower Queen Ellie Wheeler and her deputy Tegan Grist onboard.

The pair ‘sailed’ into town to be crowned in front of the Guildhall.

A spokesman said: “This was an historic occasion for the Trust, since it was the first time a narrowboat had travelled through Lichfield since the canal was abandoned in the 1950s.”
