# Brown bin waste boosts parks in Lichfield and Burntwood

Flower beds in Lichfield and Burntwood have been given a head-start this winter thanks to compost created by residents

Lichfield District Council’s gardeners have been busy re-planting the flower beds in Burntwood Park and Beacon Park using the first batch of compost that has been made out of recycled brown bin waste from local people.

As a result, old tea bags, chicken bones, banana peel and garden cuttings are now helping to grow a colourful array of flowers such as pansies, tulips, hyacinths and forget-me-nots.

Councillor Louise Flowith, Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said:

> “This is a great example of recycling using organic waste, collected from homes across the whole district, to grow beautiful flower beds in our parks. Our gardeners have done a fantastic job with their summer planting, and I’m sure the new winter flower beds will be just as beautiful – especially as they have had such a good start with plenty of nutrient rich compost.”
