A community building in Burntwood is celebrating 100 years of history.

The Old Mining College Centre in Chasetown has clocked up the landmark of service which began when it was a training centre for pit apprentices.

The Edwardian red-brick building was built in 1912 by Staffordshire County Council but in 1998 Lichfield District Council took over the running of the site, transforming it into a venue for community meetings, training and office space.

Councillor Ken Humphreys, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, cut the birthday cake and welcomed guests to the celebrations.

“I was honoured to say a few words about this impressive building,” he said. “It is a part of Chasetown’s landscape and right at the heart of community life in Burntwood.

“Everyone was full of praise for the building and said how much they enjoyed the centenary year celebrations.”

From flower arranging to slimming classes, the Old Mining College Centre’s community room is used by a wide variety of groups. It also has a training room, an IT suite and nine offices. There are currently four voluntary organisations and four local businesses operating out of the offices, with one remaining office available to let.
