A Burntwood man has discovered the largest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in Britain.

Fifty-five-year-old Terry Herbert made the discovery at an undisclosed location in Staffordshire.

The metal detectorist unearthed 2.5kg of silver and 5kg of gold in the field of a farmer friend.

Mr Herbert said:

> “This is what metal detectorists dream of, finding stuff like this. But the vast amount there is is just unbelievable.”

A number of the finds – which are currently being held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery – are believed to have a warfare significance.

Authorities have not revealed the exact site of the discovery and it is not yet known it is linked to an [archaeological survey](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/09/16/hammerwich-residents-reassured-over-police-presence/) carried out recently in Hammerwich which saw police land search teams involved after metal objects and bone were discovered.
