Two Burntwood men have pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a crash which killed a married couple.

Fifty-two-year-old coach driver Robert Oughton, of Newgate Street, and his 1-4-You Airports and Coach Travel boss, 60-year-old John Lote, of Meadway Street, admitted the offence at Leeds Crown Court.

The coach being driven by Oughton crashed into a car on the A64 near Scarborough on September 21 last year. The occupants of the car – Deborah and Paul Clements – both died.

Six passengers on the coach, which was taking a marching band from Walsall to a competition, were also injured.

The pair pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of gross negligence, namely because the coach involved in the collision was not kept in a safe and roadworthy condition, the braking system had not been checked and maintained and appropriate safety checks had not been carried out.

They will be sentenced on November 13.
