A man has been sent to prison after the theft of Poppy Appeal collection tins in Burntwood.

Twenty-six-year-old Darren Jones, of Oak Lane, Chase Terrace, was sentenced to four months in jail for the thefts – which took place shortly after his release from a two month prison sentence for the same offence.

Jones had taken the three collection tins from locations around the Burntwood area.

Inspector Kevin Mulligan, Neighbourhood Policing Commander for Burntwood said:

> “I want people to know how seriously we take this kind of crime. Taking money from charities by theft or fraud is despicable, and the Poppy Appeal is so close to people’s hearts that this really touches a nerve.

> “We’re very pleased with the result however, and hope that maybe he’ll learn this time, that we won’t tolerate this kind of behaviour.”
