Burntwood RUFC finally reached the halfway point in their league season and their title winning ambitions are still on course.

They have a perfect record of 11 wins from 11 starts, the latest included a bonus point to help them complete the double over Handsworth.

The hosts elected to face the strong wind in the first half and adopted just the right tactics to monopolise territory and possession. Close quarter popping and driving kept Handsworth in their own half.

The visitors’ defended well but a prolonged, multi-handling move finally broke the deadlock on 20 minutes. Halil Gozukucuk was on hand to round off an excellent team try.

The visitors had the chance of an immediate reply from the restart but a penalty kick at goal was off target.

Five minutes from half time, Matt Wood set off on the counter attack after fielding a clearance by Handsworth. A superb handling move saw the ball find its way back to the full back who cut inside then out only to lose possession in the act of scoring.

Burntwood kept the pressure on at the ensuing scrum and won the next put in. The ball was moved wide and Wood was in the line to feed Matt Sishton who crossed unopposed in the left corner.

The home side were penalised again at the restart but this time the visitors’ kicker split the uprights with a well-struck kick to leave the half time score 10-3.

Burntwood remained in control after the turnaround forcing Handsworth to concede penalties, two of which Wood converted to put his side 16-3 up after 55 minutes.

Wood then made amends for his first half miss by coming into the line at pace following a line out turnover to race clean through to the posts from the visitors’ ten metre line to score a try which he also converted.

Just after the hour mark, a rare try from flanker Tom Restall sealed the bonus point. Possession was moved right then left before Restall’s dummy saw him run in from 25 metres for a good individual try. Wood converted.

The final try came with two minutes left to play. Winger Sishton cut in from the left to feed his back line. Good handling presented Dan Garrity with a run to the corner for the final points of the afternoon.

Burntwood continued to press for another score in the short time left but the only result was a yellow card for an infringement by a Handsworth defender.

This Saturday (February 12) Burntwood begin to catch up on their backlog of league fixtures by hosting Newcastle, a side who are also in contention for a top spot. The 2nds are at home to St Leonards and the 3rds are away to Rugeley 2nds.
