Burntwood’s first ever fixture with Clee Hill ended honours even – a fair result given that the hosts dominated the first half, while the visitors had the better of the second period.

Scoring chances were few and far between on the narrow confines of the home pitch. The hosts won the try scoring by two to one but they lacked a kicker of Will Peach’s accuracy, the outside half superbly converting his late try having kicked a penalty goal early in the contest.

Burntwood looked good in the opening ten minutes despite a coach journey of nearly two hours to get to the ground. In the first minute Will Marsh set up a penalty kick for goal after making ground down the right touchline and chipping ahead only to be barged illegally off the ball.

Peach slid his kick right of the goal on this occasion but following some good phases of play in the opposition half he was presented with another opportunity and this time he was successful from 30 metres to open the scoring.

However, when he missed touch with a penalty kick eight minutes later no-one could have predicted what happened next. The home full back set off on a diagonal run inside his own 22 and out paced the Burntwood defence for an American Football style kick return touchdown covering 70 metres.

Suitably encouraged by taking the lead in such spectacular fashion, Clee Hill kept play deep in Burntwood territory for the rest of the half, forcing a series of close range mauls and scrums. A combination of solid defence plus costly infringements by the hosts meant that the scoreline remained unchanged until the break.

The nearest Clee came to adding to their lead was a penalty goal attempt from infront of the posts after 38 minutes. The ball toppled off the tee so the kicker had to resort to a hasty drop goal attempt but it went left of the target.

Another penalty award two minutes into the second half led to Clee Hill’s second try. The ball was kicked for a line out. With the ball secured the scrum half exposed some weak cover close to the forwards and he fed the full back who crossed again to make it 10-5.

Burntwood were now in real danger of losing their unbeaten start to the league season and responded well to take play into the opposition half but they were met with a seemingly impenetrable home defence.

Peach and Brett Taylor put their side in good field position on several occasions by punting kicks to the corners but with the Burntwood line out misfiring they couldn’t capitalise until the last five minutes.

A sustained attack took play right and then wide left for Peach to follow up and stretch over the line close to the corner flag. Faced with a touchline conversion, he expertly split the uprights to bring the scores level.

Sniffing a chance of a win, Burntwood worked their way out from their own half from the restart. They won a penalty which Peach kicked to the home 22 but the line out was lost again. Clee kicked clear for Taylor to catch and attempt a drop goal from long range but it sailed left and both sides settled for a share of the spoils.

This Saturday (November 1), after two games on the road, Burntwood welcome high flying Eccleshall to The Sportsway. The 2nds travel to play Leek 2nds and the 3rds are away to Brinsford. All kick offs now revert to 2.15pm.
