Burntwood RUFC’s hopes of downing second placed Harborne were effectively ended in a five minute period either side of half time, as the visitors scored three tries and converted twice during this period to complete their points tally for the match.

Ben Holt’s side kicked off and went into a three point lead courtesy of a penalty goal from Will Peach. However, the Birmingham side scored the first try of the afternoon on 20 minutes. They moved the ball well through the hands to put their left winger over in the clubhouse corner.

Harborne seemed to be in again four minutes later but were brought back for a forward pass.

Their next try came via a breakaway after Burntwood were in possession on the visitors’ 22\. Harborne turned the ball over, broke over halfway and a chip and chase led to a converted try under the posts.

After a stoppage for an injury to the Harborne tight head prop, it was the hosts’ turn to relieve pressure by turning the ball over and clearing to halfway. The visitors infringed and Peach landed his penalty attempt from the 10 metre line to make it 12-6.

He had another attempt directly from the restart on the halfway line which was good for distance but just left of the target.

Burntwood were then the engineers of their own downfall to concede 14 points just before the break. First they threw a pass which was intercepted on the visitors’ 10 metre line which allowed a clean run to the posts. Then, the deep restart kick was run back by one player who weaved his way through some flimsy attempts at tackles for another converted try.

To make matters worse Harborne went further ahead just two minutes into the second period. They exploited a two on one for a try in the right corner which went unconverted.

Burntwood had the better of the rest of the contest, spending long periods in the visitors’ 22 but lacked a cutting edge against a well-organised defence. Will Marsh went close but was forced into touch near the clubhouse corner.

Despite Harborne temporarily going down to 14 for a yellow card, it was not until the 70th minute that Burntwood gained some reward. With a sense of adventure, the visitors tried to move the ball across their back line infront of their own posts only for skipper Holt to intercept and dot down almost in one movement. Peach converted.

In the time remaining Harborne went close from one attack seven minutes from time before infringing. Then Brett Taylor went close to scoring a consolation try only for a scrambling defence to deny him.

This Saturday Burntwood play their penultimate game of the season with a trip to Newcastle (Staffs) whilst the 2nds and 3rds are due to welcome Newcastle 2nds and 3rds to The Sportsway.
