Burntwood RUFC scored 34 unanswered points in the second half to back up their county cup win a week earlier over the same opponents with a bonus point league triumph.

Wednesbury made a good start to the first period and went ahead with a penalty goal just three minutes into the contest. However, they only led for five minutes before the hosts ran in the first of their seven tries.

The home forwards made good progress up to the visitors’ 5 metre line. Skipper Ian Jones darted for the line but when he was held up hooker Danny Poole was there to dive over for the score. Will Peach added a fine conversion.

Three minutes later the deficit was back to a single point via a penalty struck from 30 metres in front of the posts.

With 20 minutes gone the Burntwood forwards set up a good attack helped by the backs taking the ball and cutting back inside. They reached the five metre line before catching Wednesbury offside in front of their posts. Jones tapped and dummied a pass out wide which the home defence bought and he stretched over for a try easily converted by Peach.

Five minutes later the visitors hit back by disrupting a scrum in the home 22\. They broke off the back to charge over the line for a try but it went unconverted.

A series of repeated technical offences cost Wednesbury a player to the sin bin with half an hour gone and Burntwood made them pay almost immediately. Ben Holt broke into the 22 but his scoring pass went to ground.

No matter as just two minutes later Burntwood were able to stretch the visitors’ defence to the left touchline then the right. Good passing provided winger Nick Peplow with an opening although he had to fight his way over for the touch down.

Just before the break, Wednesbury had two chances to score. The first was denied by an excellent try saving tackle from Jack Neale. Then, when Burntwood infringed, the visitors’ kicker went for goal but his kick slid wide to leave the hosts ahead 19-11.

Three minutes after the turnaround Peach extended the lead with a sweetly struck drop goal. He then converted an excellent try by James Langford four minutes later which earned the bonus point. Holt was the provider, sending the full back down the left touchline and round behind the posts.

There was little to excite the crowd for a spell as play passed the hour mark until Josh Bayliss made a good break which led to a penalty award. Peach made no mistake from in front to make it 32-11.

Then the hosts hit a purple patch in the last ten minutes to run in three converted tries. A break out of their own half saw Peach feed Langford who took play down the left touchline. His pass back inside to Rob Jones was expertly slipped out of the back door to Craig Seedhouse who was away unopposed to the posts.

Mark Poole instigated the next score. His powerful drive created the momentum for a move which was suitably finished off by son Danny in the bottom corner. Peach converted superbly and then completed a personal haul of 18 points by adding the extras to another long range effort from Langford following a Wednesbury handling error which Holt seized on and fed wide.

The two highest scorers on the first week of league action face each other on the second week as Burntwood travel to face Bloxwich, who topped 60 points on the opening day. The second string host Aldridge 2nds and the Development Squad are away to Wednesbury 3rds – all kick offs are 3pm.
