Burntwood RUFC moved into the top half of the table after winning this re-arranged league fixture at Uttoxeter.

Ben Holt’s side ran in seven tries but some credit must go to the hosts who are not having the best of seasons. They showed spirited defence, particularly in the last quarter, to prevent a bigger losing margin.

The visitors, buoyed by two wins on the trot, made a good start, keeping play in their opponents’ half. They went ahead as early as the 7th minute.

Dave Ward drove well from a line out to provide front foot ball for the backs. Luke Rookyard dummied his way through to the try line and Will Peach converted.

Uttoxeter’s first threat came nine minutes later. Aided by a couple of penalty awards they mauled close to the Burntwood line but were held up and Peach cleared to halfway from the resulting scrum.

The result was effectively decided in the five minute spell up to half time. Charlie Liggins had already gone close to scoring before he touched down twice in just two minutes.

The first came from line out possession which Sean Brennan drove into the home 22\. The ball was moved wide and a long pass to Brett Taylor allowed the full back to put Liggins in unopposed.

From the restart, a big tackle by Rookyard won possession and Liggins was put clear again to score in the right corner. Peach added a fine conversion from the touchline.

After an injury delay for Holt to receive treatment, Josh Canning caught the restart kick to set up a maul on his own ten metre line. A quick show and go by Ian Jones took him all the way to the home five metre line where he drew the last defender and fed Brennan for the bonus point try. Peach converted to give his side a 26-0 half time lead.

All three replacements came on for the second period and one of them, Ben Tranter, made an early impression with a good run down the left wing. It led to a scrum which Burntwood took against the put in but Roookyard had the ball dislodged close to the line.

However, just two minutes later, Burntwood stole another home put in and Graham Shelley finished off a pushover try which Peach converted.

Uttoxeter’s only score followed a series of penalty awards, the last of which was goaled from infront of the posts on 52 minutes.

At this point the scrums went uncontested which didn’t help Burntwood’s quest for more points. They ran the ball at every opportunity but found it difficult to break through on a tight pitch against determined opponents playing for pride.

Peach kicked a penalty award to the left corner just after the hour mark. Shelley won the ball and fed birthday boy Elliot Tomlinson who peeled round for his side’s sixth try.

In the time remaining Uttoxeter covered and tackled superbly but their defence was finally beaten in the last minute following a sustained attack which Shelley finished off for his second try. Peach’s conversion proved to be the final act as his side completed their third consecutive win.

Burntwood have every chance of making it four wins on the trot when they welcome basement side Aston Old Edwardians to the Sportsway this Saturday – kick off 2.15pm. The 2nds are away to Stoke 2nds and the 3rds are away to St Leonards.
