Burntwood RUFC racked up 16 tries without reply against basement side Aston Old Edwardians to extend their winning run to four matches.

The visitors had no answer to the all-round game of Ben Holt’s side, particularly in the second half when they scored 63 points.

The top try scorers on the day showed the diversity of the home attack and the vulnerability of the visitors’ defence. Skipper Holt used his pace and eye for a gap to run in five tries whilst Hal Gozukucuk used a more direct approach, fending off would-be tacklers for four tries.

It was Holt who began the try-fest after five minutes when co-centre Luke Rookyard picked a good line before feeding Holt for the score.

Handling errors by the hosts provided the visitors with good field position but they couldn’t capitalise and it wasn’t long before play was back in the AOE half. Charlie Liggins made a good break down the right wing and found Zak Shingler in support who sped to the line for a well-taken try. Will Peach converted.

Liggins himself went in for the next try having been freed on the visitors’ ten metre line following a forceful run by Graham Shelley. Peach added the extras.

The nearest the visitors came to scoring was around the 20 minute mark. A penalty attempt sailed left of the target and then their forwards drove close to the posts but were held up.

Rookyard led a break out which was supported by Gozukucuk. He found Brett Taylor who dummied his way through a gap and ran clean through to the posts for the bonus point try after just 24 minutes. Peach converted.

Gozukucuk scored his first on the half hour mark having exchanged passes with Corey Douglas. Holt added his second five minutes later, a fine individual effort, and then right on the half time whistle Gozukucuk powered his way through to the posts for his second. Peach’s conversion made it 43-0 at half time.

Gozukucuk completed his hat trick two minutes into the second period with another strong run through centre field. Three minutes later Shelley dived over to score after the pack took a five metre scrum against the put in.

Clever play by Holt put Liggins in for his second try before Rookyard scored twice in five minutes, both from unstoppable runs.

Gozukucuk added his fourth try on the hour before Holt added three further tries in the final quarter. The first followed good work by Rookyard, Elliott Woolley and Dave Ward; the next was an individual effort and the last was supplied by Ben Tranter.
Peach converted all nine second half scores for a run of ten successful conversions in the match and a personal points tally of 26.

This Saturday Burntwood travel to face Bloxwich away and the thirds welcome Bloxwich 2nds to The Sportsway.
