# Burntwood RUFC set to complete pre-season with Pershore trip

Following an internal game plus trial matches at home to Uttoxeter and Stafford, Burntwood RUFC complete their pre-season programme by taking two squads to Pershore this Saturday (September 1).

The following week they begin life back in Midlands 3 West North with a trip to Edwardians before their first home league match on September 15 against Yardley & District – both matches kicking off at 3pm.

The main committee remains unchanged for the coming season but the club begins the new campaign with Graham MacDonald as Director of Rugby, overseeing coaching in both the senior and mini/youth sections.

There are also new captains in place. Graham Shelley stands down after five seasons as 1st XV skipper which included a league promotion and a Staffs Intermediate Cup success. He is replaced by prop forward Rob Cartwright. John Haire leads the 2nds and Andy Dodd captains the 3rds.

This is a milestone season for the club as it is 40 years since the club was started in November 1972 at the Drill Inn by founder members John Brown, Harry Cooper, Norman Leyshon, Ollie Moseley and Derek Morrish.

A series of events will be held during the season to celebrate the occasion including a dinner, a former players’ reunion, a guest invitation match plus a tour to Abercarn, South Wales in April which was the venue for the club’s first ever tour.

Celebrations begin with the Sponsors/Patrons Day on October 6 with a pre-match buffet at 2pm followed by the league match against Shrewsbury kicking off at 3pm.

The club’s ever-growing mini/youth section offers youngsters from U7s to U17s the chance to play rugby. There is spare capacity at all levels but particularly in school years 6 to 10 ie. from U11s to U15s. The club would also welcome anyone willing to assist with coaching whether qualified already or prepared to become qualified and subject to a CRB check.

The youth section begin their season with two matches this Sunday with the U17s and U16s hosting Broadstreet and Tamworth respectively – both kicking off at 11am.
