# Burntwood Rugby Club end of season round-up

Burntwood rounded off their highly successful regular season by staging their AGM and their Annual Presentation Awards Dinner at their Sportsway clubhouse last week.

Following a season which has seen the first team win the Midlands 3 West North league title to gain promotion; reach the final of the Staffs Intermediate Cup; the Veterans win the Old Newtonians Golden Oldies Tournament and the first product of the mini/youth section, Ryan Mason, gain England representative honours at U16s, the players, committee and coaching staff were able to celebrate their achievements at the Dinner last Friday.

Player of the Year Awards went to Graham Shelley (1sts), Halil Gozukucuk (2nds) and Rob England (3rds/vets). The Young Player of the Season Award was won by Jack Neale. Most Improved Player went to 1st team prop forward Rob Cartwright and Clubman of the Year was Martyn Smith.

At the club’s AGM held two nights earlier the main committee positions stayed very much as you were. The main change sees Mark Bourne taking on the role of Club Captain, allowing Andy Macey to concentrate on the single role of Fixture Secretary.

With Paul Rogers relinquishing his position as Clubhouse Manager to concentrate on coaching duties, a re-structuring of the club’s organisation sees Bob Osbourne become Business Development Manager.

Burntwood’s playing season isn’t quite at an end. They play in one of the Help for Heroes matches this Saturday which forms part of the club’s President’s Day at The Sportsway – kick off 1.00 pm. The players then have a brief, well-earned rest before Head Coach Graham MacDonald begins pre-season training sessions on Tuesday, 7th June ready for the new campaign.

However, it is not all work and no play. Burntwood Rugby Club Sports Association hold their Summer Ball in the marquee on Saturday, 2nd July. Then the marquee will be the venue for a Sportsman’s Dinner on Thursday, 14th July when Jon Bentley and Steve Kindon will provide the entertainment. Non-members are welcome. Burntwood RFU Junior Section has capped off another busy season with four players attending County games and one player making the England and Leicester Tigers ranks.

Membership of the club has grown steadily over the season, ending with in excess of 170 players in the section. For the first time in a few years they are looking forward to starting the 2011/12 season with a full colts team, aswell as teams from Under 12 to Under 17s. The club have players from age 5 and up, and this Mini section of the club is also steadily expanding.
