Business leaders say they are “disappointed” by the decision to delay parts of the HS2 project.

Sections of the controversial high speed rail line in and around Lichfield have been paused after the Government confirmed a “re-phasing” of the scheme which will see some sections mothballed.

Raj Kandola, head of policy and strategic relationships at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said the move was not a positive one for businesses.

> “While we understand the challenging fiscal position the Government currently finds itself in, we are disappointed with the short-term thinking behind this decision.
>
> “Any additional delays are likely to add to the long-term cost of delivery, particularly as inflation is forecast to come down over the coming months.
>
> “Alongside key stakeholders from across the country, wemet with the Rail Minister to communicate the impact of this decision. You can see first-hand the thousands of jobs and apprenticeships the programme has already delivered and the positive momentum that has played an important role in driving confidence across the region as we emerged from the pandemic.
>
> “Levelling Up can only be realised if HS2 is backed in its entirety given the broader economic benefits it will bring the country from years to come.”

The move to pause parts of the HS2 project has seen Lichfield’s MP [call for clarity](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/areas-blighted-by-hs2-deserve-answers-on-impact-of-reported-delays-to-project-lichfield-mp-says/) for those communities where work has already caused huge disruption.
