# By-election candidate plans to be “pain in the neck” to ensure new railway station is built

A BY-ELECTION candidate says he intends to be “a pain in the neck” to ensure a new railway station is built.

Glen Bown will be Labour’s representative when voters head to the polls in the Alrewas and Fradley ward on 24th July.

The Lichfield District Council by-election was called following the resignation of former leader Mike Wilcox for “personal reasons”.

Mr Bown said that if elected he intended to make his voice heard on the need for a new railway station at Alrewas.

He said:

> “The Midland Rail Hub announcement made in the last couple of weeks is a hugely important and helpful one for the whole region, but also potentially for Alrewas.

> “The problem has always been capacity to add passenger trains on the line to Birmingham. But with extra capacity being created for more trains, provision at Alrewas simply must happen.”

Calls have previously been made for the Cross City Line to be extended beyond Lichfield Trent Valley to provide provision for Alrewas and the National Memorial Arboretum.

Mr Bown said an additional stop on the existing tracks would have wide-reaching benefits.

> “A new station at Alrewas would relieve traffic on the A38, make it easier for more people to visit the National Memorial Arboretum and make it easier for local residents to go to work or leisure in Lichfield and Birmingham.

> “The people in Government and Network Rail need to know how strongly people feel about the issue – and frankly, I plan to use being a Lichfield councillor to persuade, badger and be a pain in the neck to those in authority until we have our station.”
