More than 7,500 people have now signed a petition in a bid to prevent the facility from closing.

Lichfield District Council has now revisited the decision, which has been caused by plans for the profit-making elements of the leisure centre to be transferred to The Friary School to support a plan to become an academy.

Cllr Doug Pullen, leader of the local authority, has [previously pledged to hold the next stage of the debate over the site’s future in public](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2019/07/18/lichfield-district-council-confirms-date-for-public-meeting-over-future-of-friary-grange-leisure-centre-as-fresh-talks-take-place/) – a move which has led the council to consider increasing the capacity for the meeting.

He said: “I’ve said that we will be an open and transparent council, so we’re in the process of securing a larger venue for our 7th October Cabinet meeting so that as many people as want to attend can do so.

“We will also dedicate 45 minutes to public participation – an unprecedented step.”
