# Call for scrutiny committee to debate Lichfield District Council’s new Jaguar XF

A Burntwood councillor is asking for the decision by Lichfield District Council to lease a new Jaguar to be looked at by the local authority’s scrutiny committee.

It was [confirmed yesterday](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/03/03/leader-insists-new-jaguar-car-will-save-lichfield-district-council-money/) that a new Jaguar XF was being delivered under a lease agreement.

The vehicle will be used to allow the chairman of Lichfield District Council to attend civic engagements.

However, while he admits a suitable vehicle needs to be chosen, Cllr Steve Norman (Lab, Summerfield) believes the scrutiny committee needs to ensure that taxpayers are getting the best deal.

He told *The Lichfield Blog*:

> “I will ask that a report on this is given to the strategic overview and scrutiny committee so that members can be the judge. We need to look again at every penny we spend and every way we do things to see if there is a more efficient way of doing it.

> “The grant we have got from the ConDem government is much worse than Eric Pickles said it would be and our MPs seem reluctant to fight for a fairer deal for Lichfield District.

> “If the council is going to have a civic head then they need some dignified transport to attend events. I remember the Governor of the Falklands used a taxi and the previous Leader of the Greater London Council spent a fortune of chauffer driven vehicles which Ken Livingstone got rid of when he became Leader.

> “A Bentley would be too grand – though there are councils with them – and just using a taxi would be impractical. Nevertheless it would be worth investigating different ways the chairman’s transport could be provided and whether this particular car and model was essential.”

Lichfield District Council’s leader, Cllr Mike Wilcox said the new lease agreement had been negotiated to save money after a previous car deal expired.
