Police are launching an amnesty for people to hand in unwanted, unlicensed or illegal firearms.

The national campaign runs until 29th May and is being supported by Staffordshire Police.

It will give people the chance to hand over guns and ammunition without fear of prosecution for illegal ownership.

Firearms and explosives licensing manager Jon Cumberbatch said:

> “Firearms incidents continue to be low in Staffordshire and to ensure that it doesn’t become prevalent in the future, we are working with partners and local communities to safeguard, educate and intervene at the earliest opportunity.
>
> “Surrendering unwanted, unlicensed firearms and ammunition avoids the risk of them becoming involved in criminality and means that members of the community can dispose of firearms in a safe place.
>
> “Every gun given up is one fewer that criminals could use.”
