CAMPAIGNERS fighting a new development in Burntwood say they are not anti-housing.

Burntwood Action Group (BAG) has been battling proposals for more than 200 new homes on land at Coulter Lane.

The plans were rejected at a recent meeting of Lichfield District Council, which saw protesters make their feelings known before the meeting.

But BAG has hit back at suggestions of double standards due to many other local housing areas being built on land that was previously open space.

In a statement, the group said:

> "We want to be 100% clear – Burntwood Action Group is not anti-housing.
>
> "Our children and grandchildren need affordable, local homes, but there is a massive difference between planned community growth and a speculative corporate free-for-all.
>
> "When estates like Whitehouse Farm, Hunslet and Highfields were built, they were brought forward through a structured, plan-led process, designed with matching infrastructure, local roads and community planning.
>
> "What's happening today is completely different.
>
> "Developers are taking advantage of a temporary delay in the council's Local Plan to force through over 1,350 speculative homes all at once. They aren't building for local need, they are exploiting green belt rules to maximise corporate profits before our new planning protections are locked in.
>
> "The green belt is our current battleground because that is where developers are pushing their luck."

The group said that despite the campaign against the Coulter Lane scheme and other attempts to develop green space in the town, their efforts were not "just about preserving grass".

> "It's about infrastructure – our schools, GP surgeries and roads are already at breaking point.
>
> "Dumping more than 1,350 houses without upgrades destroys quality of life for everyone.
>
> "We want homes built on brownfield and degraded grey belt sites first, through an agreed Local Plan.
>
> "Burntwood should not be treated as an easy target just because developer profits come first.
>
> "We want the right homes, in the right places, with the right infrastructure."
