HS2 protesters in Lichfield

Campaigners fighting to stop a high-speed rail line being built through Lichfield have said that the Government should include the project in their cuts.

Members of the Lichfield Action Group will join other organisations, including Stop HS2, will travel to London next week for a lobby day at Westminster.

And one of the issues they will be raising will be whether the line will provide the economic growth cited by the coalition as the reason for it to survive the funding axe.

Joe Rukin from Stop HS2 explained:

> “It is amazing that the Government are still willing to go ahead with this when everything else has been cut. They saying it will regenerate the regions, but the key study conducted for HS2 Ltd by Imperial College states that the amount of new economic growth created by HS2 would be ‘very small indeed’.

> “This is all about pandering to a very small number of businessmen who want to go to and from Europe without having to change trains in London.”
