A national campaign group has applauded the news that a full inquiry will be held in the economic case behind a new high speed rail line.

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant [revealed](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/02/25/lichfield-mp-confirms-full-inquiry-will-be-held-into-economic-case-for-hs2/) that the Transport Select Committee would be investigating the numbers behind the HS2 scheme last week.

And now the Stop HS2 group believes the Government will struggle to justify “a vanity project” in front of the committee.

Their cause has been boosted by the news that the [Green Party had decided to oppose the proposals for high speed rail](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/03/02/green-party-calls-for-hs2-plans-to-be-abandoned/).

The group’s chair, Lizzy Williams, said:

> “HS2 is not green. Sir Brian Briscoe said recently on the Politics Show that if the project was not sustainable it would not obtain Royal Assent. The Green Party opposing this project is a clear message to the country that HS2 is Greenwash and in the Green Party’s own words ‘it wouldn’t do what it says on the tin’.

> “The Government’s superficial coat of carbon neutral, green wash paint is wearing off far quicker than they anticipated.”
