A NEW lift bridge over a stretch of the Lichfield Canal has been officially named after a key figure in its creation.

Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust (LHCRT) marked the opening of the crossing at Gallows Reach on Tamworth Road with designer and former trustee Peter Buck unveiling the Buck's Bridge nameplate.

The lift bridge was installed earlier this year following three days of precision engineering by ProMack Ltd, supported by earlier groundwork from Walsh Construction and LHCRT volunteers.

It now provides a safe crossing point over the canal line, preserving the public right-of-way and will ultimately lift to allow boats to pass through.

The trust's vice president Bob Williams said:

> "Buck’s Bridge is more than a piece of engineering, it represents vision, persistence, teamwork and the generosity of our supporters.
>
> "Naming it after Peter Buck is a fitting tribute to someone whose imagination helped shape this part of the canal’s future."

The bridge was funded thanks to support from the community via LHCRT’s Big Give Christmas Challenge appeal in 2022 which raised £39,000\. A further £21,000 was donated from the legacy of a local supporter.
