Staffordshire Police will have two new crime-busting police dogs available thanks to a charity.

The animals were donated by Sniffer Dogs UK and International (SDUKI) and the force will become only the second in the country to have dogs funded by the group.

Jasper, a 17-month-old English springer spaniel, is a specialist explosives search dog who has just received his license following an eight-week training course in the methods of explosive detection. He will be working towards the Olympics and will search areas before dignitaries and VIPs arrive in the county.

Ten-month-old Echo, a German shepherd, will work as a general purpose dog. He has been trained in searching for suspects and missing people, locating objects dropped or concealed during a crime, following a track left by a person on the ground, chasing and detaining a person who runs away when challenged to stop, disarming violent armed suspects and controlling hostile crowds.

The charity’s founder Maggie Gwynne said:

> “SDUKI are delighted to have been able to fund two dogs for Staffordshire Police as part of our aim to provide support to all front-line units. We want to help dog sections, anywhere in the country, by strengthening their numbers and providing money for kennelling, training equipment and training for handlers.”

Both dogs will work with handler PC Steven Cartlidge and will search crime scenes, buildings, open spaces and vehicles and to assist in executing search warrants.

Inspector Chris Dawson, of the dog support unit, said:

> “Jasper and Echo will work alongside our existing dogs and are very welcome new members of the team. We already have a strong team of dogs and handlers, but Maggie’s fundraising means we can provide an even better service to keep our local communities safe and reassured.”
