The National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield is set welcome a team of runners highlighting the sacrifices made by the men and women of the armed forces.

The Bastion Baton charity group will run overnight from RAF Lyneham, passing through Wootton Bassett, as a mark of respect to soldiers who have been injured or killed in Afghanistan.

They will use a baton made from the handle of a stretcher used at Camp Bastion that contains a message pledging support for the men and women of the military.

A spokesman for the runners said:

> “Over the past year the baton has already covered many miles carried by a variety of people, all of whom passionately believe that the message of support has to be kept at the forefront of the nation’s conscience. There is never any pressure to raise money, although donations are always gratefully accepted. The main intention is simply to promote the message.”

The baton has so far travelled to the Everest Base Camp twice, been used in the Lympstone to Poole race, the London Marathon, Ten Tors and the Great North Run.

The group will be arriving in Lichfield on Sunday (November 7). For more information visit [www.thebaton.co.uk](http://www.thebaton.co.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk).
