Evesham gave Chasetown a tough pre-season test with honours shared at 0-0 despite the goalscoring opportunities on offer.

The Scholars became the latest side to experience Evesham’s brand new Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium – and the first thing that struck many away fans was the openness of the new ground, expecting relatively windy days like Saturday would give an advantage to one side in each half.

That was certainly true in the first period as Chasetown goalkeeper Lee Evans was getting long distances with goal kicks and drop kicks.

The first real chance of the game came to Craig Harris’ side. A superb cross from Andy Westwood was met by a powerful Danny Smith header, which was straight at goalkeeper Dean Coleman from around 12 yards out. Either side of Coleman and he would have needed an incredible save to keep the effort out.

Evesham missed an absolute sitter from close range as the half progressed and – in a first half not over-flowing with goalscoring opportunities – the Scholars’ best attempt came five minutes before the half-time interval when a short corner was deflected into the path of Westwood, whose first time drive was rising and narrowly flew over the crossbar.

There were plenty of competitive battles over the park, with both recently relegated sides looking to regroup ahead of the new campaign which starts on August 18 with Chasetown travelling to Kings Lynn.

Striker Gary Hay, who notched the only goal at Tipton last week, will wonder how he failed to get on the scoresheet this time out. An innocuous ball forward should have been meat and drink to keeper Coleman, but the ball took an unexpectedly high bounce, eluding the home stopper and ricocheting off the crossbar. Substitute Chris Russell reacted first, unselfishly setting up Gary Hay, who somehow steered his diving header wide of the post with the goal at his mercy.

That said, manager Craig Harris will have been happy with another solid performance from his side and a first clean sheet of the pre-season campaign.

**Chasetown:** Evans, Richardson (Farmer), Johnson, Slater, Bate (Saunders), Teesdale, Brown (Clarke-O’Connell), Westwood, Smith (Russell), Hay (Robinson), Downes (Branch).
