In-form Chasetown Reserves completed back-to-back 4-0 victories when Highgate Utd reserves visited the Scholars Ground.

As per Saturday’s venture to Heather St John’s, Chasetown were rampant from the outset.

They almost grabbed the advantage on four minutes when Gavin Saunders produced a 20 yard drive which keeper Frank Havellant tipped over the bar. From Drew Aiton’s resulting corner Mark Swann’s side did break the deadlock. Jack Stone lost his marker and leapt to head past goalkeeper Havellent.

Chasetown continued to pressurise with the lively Dwayne Spence menacing the Highgate defence.

It was almost 2-0 after 18 minutes as a Spence effort from outside the box went narrowly over.

Highgate were clearly shaken by the early Scholars onslaught and Havellent breathed a sigh of relief when a Saunders’ free kick went just wide of his left hand post.

Aiton was next to go close with a delightful chip, only for a Highgate defender to hook it away.

The visitors’ first reply came as they broke away on 37 minutes but Lee Stretton was quick to intercept. The subsequent corner was gathered up easily by Mark Wiggins between the sticks.

Chasetown were passing with fluency, underpinned by good support from full backs Jack Farmer and Nathaniel Jones. Hungry Andy Westwood was winning most of his midfield duels.

On the stroke of half-time, Jamie Hawkins was in the thick of the action when he picked out Gonzales on the left wing. He manoeuvred inside from the touch line, leaving two defenders in his wake before curling past Havellent from the angle to make it 2-0.

Gonzales doubled his tally 11 minutes into the second half when Hawkins found Spencer whose shot ricocheted off Havellent, allowing the Chasetown man to tuck home from close range.

The Scholars went close to increasing their lead with shots from Max Black and Spencer. However, Highgate refused to sit back and Wiggins was called into action on 73 minutes, saving comfortably from winger Ron Adji.

Five minutes later Adji was involved again, his shot striking the foot of the Chasetown post.

The hosts’ fourth goal arrived from the ensuing counter attack as Craig Deakin produced lofted pass and Spencer finished in style.

Moments later Gonzales displayed a devastating turn of pace and fired a shot just wide.

In the closing stages Justin Haughton’s shot was saved off the line as the Scholars pushed for a fifth.

Chasetown have six games remaining in the MFC Reserve League. This outstanding performance from the Scholars has put them five points clear at the top with a game in hand over second place Boldmere St Michael’s Reserves.
