The meerkats at Drayton Manor

Meerkats at a zoo near Lichfield have been getting into the festive spirit after their enclosure was decorated with a Christmas tree and presents.

The treat has been put in for the animals at Drayton Manor Theme Park’s zoo.

Debbie Downer, the meerkat’s keeper, explained: “We routinely provide activities for the animals as part of an enrichment programme.

“On this occasion, we put a Christmas hat in their enclosure and Aja went straight for it and refuses to let anyone else play with it.

“There are also two newborn babies in the mob, who are eagerly awaiting their first Christmas. If they’re good they may even get some special treats too.”

Visitors can see the meerkats, along with many other animals, as the zoo is open as part of Drayton’s Magical Christmas, which runs till January 2, 2012.
