Securing a town deal for Burntwood could “breathe new life” into the area, according to the leader of Lichfield District Council.

A meeting last week saw agreement reached by representatives of the council, as well as members of Staffordshire County Council and Burntwood Town Council on pushing for improved retail areas.

Cllr Mike Wilcox, leader of Lichfield District Council, said the consensus was a big step forward.

“There is now an agreement from all of us to try to put a town deal together for Burntwood,” he said.

“We’re also working with landowners to see if they can release space.

“Now there is [new housing coming](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2015/07/08/report-recommends-approving-new-350-home-development-in-burntwood/), we think a town deal can breathe life back into the town.”

Plans have also been unveiled to [improve transport links in Burntwood](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2015/09/17/plans-to-improve-burntwood-transport-links-unveiled/).

And Cllr Wilcox believes a joined up approach with neighbouring areas will be crucial.

“In terms of Burntwood there’s a real need to make sure there are strong links with both Lichfield and Cannock,” he said.

“But it’s also about improving accessibility to public transport for everyone. A lot of bus operators come into our area so we need to make sure services are supporting everyone, including those living in more rural areas.”
