The future of Lichfield’s public leisure centre should not be linked to any redevelopment of the city centre, the leader of Lichfield District Council has claimed.

[A consultation](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/council-chiefs-says-consultation-is-a-great-opportunity-for-people-to-help-shape-future-of-lichfield-city-centre/) is currently seeking views from residents on the future of the city in the wake of the failed Friarsgate scheme.

Friary Grange Leisure Centre

The 11th hour decision to save Friary Grange Leisure Centre from closure had led to [suggestions from the Liberal Democrats](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/lichfield-lib-dem-councillor-calls-for-housing-on-friarsgate-land-but-not-just-for-high-earners-and-retired-people/) that a long term replacement for the facility could be built as part of the redevelopment plans for the city centre.

But Cllr Doug Pullen, leader of Lichfield District Council, said he didn’t believe the two projects would be linked.

> “The draft is for a city centre masterplan, restricted to a fairly small geographic area.
>
> “My personal view is that a leisure centre doesn’t belong in the city centre.
>
> “There’s a separate team of people working on Friary Grange Leisure Centre, in terms of securing the existing site and planning for future options.”
