The new initiative was launched at the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum with drinks courtesy of the Angel Inn, which is one of ten venues taking part.

Councillor Helen Fisher, Cabinet member for tourism at Lichfield District Council, said the new trail highlighted the variety of pubs on offer across the city.

“We’re so lucky in Lichfield to have such a brilliant selection of venues which serve quality real ales,” she said.

“The trail features ten excellent examples of them, but this is by no means a complete list. But following the trail is a great way to experience some of our historic local pubs and fine real ales.”

Pubs taking part include:

- The Bowling Green
- The Queen’s Head
- The Horse & Jockey
- The George Hotel
- The King’s Head
- Angel Inn
- The Scales
- George VI
- Malt Bar
- Whippet Inn.
