# Councillor calls for rethink on new housing developments in Lichfield

Councillor Mike Wilcox

A councillor has claimed future housing developments in Lichfield should concentrate on the main areas of the city rather than the outlying villages.

Councillor Michael Wilcox (Cons, Alrewas & Fradley) believes Lichfield District Council should be aiming to develop an environmentally sustainable community – by producing housing which is close to workplaces.

His comments came following a meeting where campaigners from the Streethay Against Development group [began their battle](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/04/22/lichfield-housing-development-would-extinguish-streethay/) against a proposal to build 850 new houses in their village.

But Coun Wilcox believes the city’s housing development strategy requires an urgent review. He said:

> “If we’re looking for sustainability in the future then we need to think again about new developments. We can reduce traffic and emissions by building homes in city areas where people can walk to work or use public transport.

> “We’ve already seen the problems in Fradley where homes were built with no facilities to serve the people moving into them. It was a failing of the planning department 20 years ago and we don’t want to see it happen again.

> “I fully support each area taking a fair share of new housing developments, but we need to look at factors like existing populations and road infrastructure. For Streethay and Fradley especially, the A38 is already at near-capacity – and with no plans to do anything about that we simply cannot accomodate anywhere near the number of houses being suggested.”
