# Councillor issues Chasewater safety warning

Visitors to Chasewater are being reminded about safety as work continues to drain a billion gallons of water from the reservoir.

The work is taking place as part of a major improvement scheme to the reservoir.

Councillor [Val Richards](http://openlylocal.com/members/2498-Val-Richards?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk), Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said:

> “Lowering the water has exposed large areas of deep mud. The mud can act like quicksand, and anyone walking over it could easily sink and become trapped.”

While the works take place, visitors are asked to:

- stay on marked footpaths
- make sure dogs are kept on a lead, and that they do not stray onto the muddy areas
- keep children under close supervision
- not walk on the exposed reservoir bed at any time
- not swim in the reservoir

Cllr Richard added:

> “We have put up warning signs around Chasewater Reservoir to highlight the dangers. However, some people have been ignoring the warnings and have been venturing out onto the mud. We also know that a rider even tried to cross the reservoir bed on horseback, which resulted in the horse getting dangerously stuck in the deep mud.

> “This is why I am once again stressing how important it is that visitors to Chasewater follow our advice and stay away from the reservoir bed. We would also urge parents to explain the dangers to their children, and to tell them to keep away from the mud.”
