A COUNCILLOR says he shares the frustration of local people over “highly dangerous” parking in Burntwood.

Cllr Andrew Clissett says he has received a number of messages about issues at the junction of Ironstone Road and Griffin Close.

The Burntwood North representative at Staffordshire County Council said discussions had taken place in a bid to resolve the issue.

But he told residents that “bureaucratic hurdles” were limiting the action that can be taken.

He said:

> “I share the sheer frustration that, despite the obvious dangers to pedestrians and drivers, nothing seems to be happening on the ground to stop it.
>
> “Over the last few weeks, I have been in direct, detailed talks with the council’s civil enforcement leadership, reviewing local patrol data and their exact legal powers.
>
> “The frustrating truth is that because there are currently no yellow lines at this junction, council enforcement officers are legally powerless to issue parking tickets for this specific type of obstruction.
>
> ”Vehicles parking here are breaching the Highway Code and completely blocking pavement access for our local wheelchair users. However, without yellow lines, the law dictates this is an ‘unnecessary obstruction’ rather than a parking violation. This makes it strictly a police matter.”

Cllr Clissett said he was now discussing the issue with police and council chiefs in a bid to address this issue in the short and long term.

He said:

> “We cannot simply accept that our safety falls into a gap between stretched police resources and restricted council powers.
>
> “I know the system moves slowly, but I will not let this drop. I will keep pushing until we get the safety measures this junction desperately needs.”
