COUNCIL chiefs say a £1.1million investment in parks and play areas will help support one of the "most valuable things we have as a district".

The money will support enhancements such as new and improved pathways at sites such as Beacon Park, Christian Fields, Saddlers Wood and Stowe Pool, as well as new safety surfacing and equipment at locations such as Chase Terrace Park, Redwood Park and Darnford Park.

Other improvements will include additional benches, picnic tables and bins, new lighting and support for groups that help look after local open spaces.

Cllr Phil Whitehouse, cabinet member responsible for parks at Lichfield District Council, said:

> "Our parks are among the most valuable things we have as a district. They keep us active and healthy, give children somewhere to play and families somewhere to spend time together and they make Lichfield District a pleasant place to live.
>
> "This is new money, on top of what we already spend on our parks, and it is about making the places you use every day better. Safer paths, better play areas, more places to sit and enjoy the outdoors.
>
> "We want to hear from residents as these plans develop, particularly on play facilities, where the views of local children and families will be central."

The programme will cover parks and play areas owned by the council.

Leader Cllr Doug Pullen said:

> "Parks don’t make headlines very often, but they matter to people’s daily lives more than almost anything else we look after.
>
> "Putting an extra £1.1million into them is a deliberate choice – and I’m proud that this council has made it.
>
> "Whether you walk the dog in Beacon Park, take the kids to Darnford or run the Greenway, you will see the difference. These are the places we know and love, and they deserve to be looked after."
