COUNCILLORS from across the political divide have teamed up to help give a patch of land a makeover.

The work has taken place on the area leading into Stowe Street and the bottom of George Lane.

Cllr Ann Hughes, Labour District Council member for Stowe ward, said she had been keen to see the plot tidied up to create a more welcoming entrance to the city for people using the route.

She explained:

> "It was an ugly mess, and there were two bushes that had definitely outgrown their welcome.
>
> "Overall, it looked shabby and neglected. It is one of the gateways to the city centre, and quite frankly, it gave a bad impression to visitors."

Cllr Hughes recruited fellow Stowe representatives Cllr Russ Bragger and Cllr Hugh Ashton to utilise the Clean and Green funding each member of the council receives to make a difference within their ward. Money was also given by Lichfield City Council to help with the project.

After researching the ownership of the land, the councillors decided that some of the area should be grassed and bollards installed to protect it from damage by cars, along with two benches allowing residents to sit and rest.

The existing overgrown bushes were also replaced by smaller plants in a raised bed.

Cllr Ashton said:

> "Living as I do just a short distance from there, every day I see that this is a major route for pedestrians making their way from the Netherstowe area.
>
> "Many of them are elderly or have mobility issues. Many use the bench at the top of Cross Keys to break their journey, but the two newly added benches are already in use by residents, even though work on the area is not yet complete, showing that there is a real need here."

Cllr Bragger added:

> "The new plants, together with the newly installed planter close by, will not only improve the look of the area, but because of the plants that have been selected, will increase the number of bees and butterflies in the neighbourhood too."

The work was managed by officers from Lichfield District Council.

Cllr Hughes said:

> "The contractors have worked hard to create what we can now call a 'micropark' in an astonishingly short space of time.
>
> "We are already receiving compliments and positive comments from our residents – and that’s not a common phenomenon in local politics."
