Lichfield District Council’s controlling Conservative group had previously given the spending the green light before it was [called in for scrutiny](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2019/04/03/outgoing-opposition-leader-warns-lichfield-district-council-needs-to-value-scrutiny-after-debate-on-decision-to-spend-300000-on-car-park-after-friarsgate-failure/) by the opposition Labour group.

Members of the Cabinet group will now discuss the outcome of the scrutiny meeting before deciding whether to push ahead with the spending.

A report to the council had revealed the money needed to be spent due to a backlog of maintenance work that had built up during the period when the car park was due to be knocked down as part of the Friarsgate development.

But [the failure of that project to materialise after more than a decade in the making](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2018/07/12/timeline-reveals-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-friarsgate-redevelopment-in-lichfield/) means that the car park now requires a range of work to be carried out.

The report suggested the cost of making changes to lighting systems would break even in terms of savings after five years.

But the decision was called in for further scrutiny by Labour over concerns the car park may not even remain in place for that long.

The decision will be made at the final meeting of the current Cabinet on Tuesday (9th April).
