Fake goods which would retail at £90,000 have been seized at a market near Lichfield.

Police and trading standards teamed up for the raid at the Barracks Lane sale in Shenstone on Saturday (August 11), confiscating 7,000 counterfeit DVDs and computer games, 3,200 cigarettes, 80 pouches of tobacco, two pairs of headphones and eight bottles of perfume.

Seven people were arrested with six bailed and one remaining in custody. A van was also held. It is the second successive weekend where counterfeit goods have been found to be on sale at the event.

Staffordshire County Councillor Pat Corfield said: “Saturday’s operation was another success in terms of stopping criminals and the sale of counterfeit goods.

“There is no let-up in our efforts to combat counterfeit traders and protect Staffordshire consumers and businesses. We’re sending out a clear message that we are on to these criminals and they should think twice before trying to ply their illegal goods in our county.

“We’d ask people attending these events to let us know if there is potential counterfeit sales activity on site. These criminals spoil family events and we want to work with organisers to stop them attending.

“People should be aware that they are not getting a bargain by purchasing counterfeit goods. They’re substandard and can be potentially dangerous.

“Counterfeit goods damage the local economy by undercutting legitimate traders as well as the national economy by defrauding the treasury.”

Insp Darren Oakey added: “This was the latest in a number of ongoing joint operations between police and trading standards to crack down on counterfeit goods at car boot sales.

“Members of the public should be aware that they will ultimately lose out by buying illegal products which are often of very poor quality.

“Anyone with information should contact Staffordshire Police on 101\. Alternatively, they can ring independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
