# County Councillor delighted as war hero memorial near Lichfield gets the go-ahead

A county councillor has said that the go-ahead for a new war memorial in a village near Lichfield is “tremendous news”.

Planning chiefs at Lichfield District Council gave the green light to the new monument at Wiggington last week, bringing the project a step closer for local residents who have been been [fundraising to pay for the design](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2010/04/29/memorial-to-war-hero-in-village-near-lichfield-moves-a-step-closer/).

The memorial will recognise Samuel Parkes who was born in the village in 1815 and won the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854, as well as others from the area who have lost their lives in conflict.

County Councillor [Matthew Ellis](http://openlylocal.com/members/5220-Matthew-Ellis?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) said:

> “This is tremendous news for many reasons. It will not only provide a fitting village memorial to the heroism of a Wigginton born soldier but also recognises that 200 years on Services personnel are still giving their lives for their country.

> “The project has also invigorated a new community spirit throughout the village. The memorial fundraising events have attracted enormous local interest which in turn is creating more events and even wider participation which I think will continue. I’m really pleased to have been able to offer some funding to kick things off and a bit of help where it’s been needed.

> “The community can be very proud of this project and it looks likely that Wigginton will have a beautiful new Memorial on the village green during the next few months.”

Fundraisers are also planning more events including:

- October 22 – Wigginton Rocks music event at Q-Zone in Tamworth.
- December 11 at 5pm – Magic of Christmas, music and family events in the church grounds at Wigginton village.
