LICHFIELD had to play catch-up rugby once more in the second half of their game with Newport, but were not able to quite snatch a draw or win.

In the end, both sides scored four tries – with the difference between the two teams being one narrowly missed conversion.

Both sides were not at their fluent best after playing no rugby for a month, but Newport had the comfort of an early 14 point lead with Charlie Gamble and George Perkins scoring the tries and Jack Ingram adding the extras.

The visitors slowly grew into the game and were rewarded with a try under the sticks by captain Kieran Reynolds, which was converted by Charlie Milner.

However, the progress by Lichfield was cut short soon after as the hosts were awarded a penalty try for a high tackle – and an obligatory yellow card for Henry Nevitt.

Lichfield saw out the ten minutes with 14 players to go in at half-time 21-7 behind.

The next two tries went the way of the men in green though, with Matt Key barging over from short range and then Dan Crabtree put clear on the overlap to score with his first touch of the ball in the senior side.

With the score at 21-19, the visitors missed a beat and allowed the home side to regain some momentum so Perkins could score again from very close range.

As players started to tire, gaps opened up and from one of these opportunities Rhys Davies escaped down the left flank and when the support arrived it was Key who deservedly got his second five pointer. With the conversion, it was back to a two point game.

Newport just about hung on for the victory during the closing minutes, as they stay in touch with long time league leaders Bournville.
