An election hopeful has paid tribute to the work of refuges after visiting a leading organisation in the area.

Chris Worsey, Labour’s candidate for the Lichfield constituency in the forthcoming General Election, saw the work carried out by the Pathway Project.

The group works to support adults and children who are impacted by domestic abuse.

“It was massively inspiring seeing the work Pathway do every day and to meet its chief officer and founder, Kathy Coe,” Mr Worsey said.

“They do a really vital job but are currently stretched right to the limit by funding cuts. Domestic abuse is a serious issue in Lichfield and the surrounding areas and we should be doing everything we can to support and properly fund this vital service.

“Pathway are always on the look out for volunteers and fundraising so I’d urge local people to get involved.”

Mr Worsey insisted a Labour government would work with groups like the Pathway Project to improve the lives of women.

He said: “We will make tackling violence against women a priority. We will introduce compulsory sex and relationship education and establish a Commissioner to set minimum standards for the police and in tackling domestic and sexual violence.

“Additionally we’ll scrap Police and Crime Commissioners and use the money to protect refuges from further closure.”
