A host of events are taking place across Lichfield and Burntwood as the nation prepares to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Street parties, the Lichfield Greenhill Bower, Burntwood Wakes and village events will be held over the special four-day bank holiday weekend from 2nd to 5th June.

Celebrations will begin outside the cathedral on Thursday with a special event to light the Platinum Jubilee Beacon alongside more than 1,500 other locations across the UK and Commonwealth.

Bells will be rung at 9.30pm to start the proceedings and the cathedral will be illuminated in red, white and blue.

There will also be a performance of Song of the Commonwealth by the Lichfield Cathedral Jubilee Choir and a piper and bugler will also play over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Curborough Community Centre in Reynolds Close is holding a free celebration on 2nd June from 1pm to 4pm, with a bouncy castle, assault course and entertainment on offer.

The Lichfield Greenhill Bower is joining the Jubilee celebrations this year on 4th June. The procession will run through Lichfield city centre with the crowning of the Lichfield Greenhill Bower Queen at 12noon. There will be a funfair in Beacon Park and Bird Street Car Park. 

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Burntwood will be centred on the traditional Wakes on 4th June. The fun takes place at Burntwood Leisure Centre from 12noon to 8pm where the event, which is free to enter, will feature a climbing wall and cave, a petting zoo, army cadets, Chasetown FC and Burntwood RFC exhibitions, inflatables, Punch and Judy and a static bird of prey display.

There will also be live entertainment on stage from numerous local acts into the evening, as well as a heritage exhibition, markets stalls and much more. 

Hammerwich is marking the occasion on 5th June from 12noon onwards. The celebration will include walks through the village, a treasure trail, market stalls, a fairground ride and a BBQ on the grounds of Hammerwich Cricket Club. Free parking is available.

People can also join the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon Trail in Lichfield city centre through an app which anyone with a smartphone can enjoy for free. F

The trail features cute characters such as Charlie Crown and Theadora Throne, Buckingham Palace residents who have come to life and are visiting Lichfield. Full details are here

On 5th June, the cathedral will conclude its weekend of celebration at 10.30am with a special choral eucharist.

During the four days, residents are also holding street parties in Lichfield, Burntwood, Whittington, Shenstone and in other neighbourhoods to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

Maybe we could have a debate about the concept of monarchy itself, which is built upon the notions of division, oppression and mumbo jumbo. But I guess we’ll have to endure several days of noise, nonsense and the subsequent clean up, across the city instead.

The country is in an economic shambles, on the verge of a recession, and the powers that be think it’s a neat idea to spend billions on throwing a party for an over-privileged 96 year old woman.
