As part of the exhibition, local historian David Robbie will host a talk at 6.30pm on November 29\. Admission is £2 and tickets are available from the library. Admission to the exhibition itself is free.

More than 44,000 people have already seen some of the works created by Tolkien during his time in the military in Staffordshire, including artworks, landscapes and photographs.

A spokesperson said: “During the Great War, Second Lieutenant JRR Tolkien of the Lancashire Fusiliers was stationed in Staffordshire, first at Whittington Heath, near Lichfield.

“Lichfield plays a particularly important part in the Tolkien in Staffordshire story. A meeting at The George Hotel in the city was the last occasion that Tolkien met with his three greatest school friends in September 1915.”
