# Expert’s Lichfield lecture puts fungi in focus

Fungi

Fungi will be the unusual topic of the first lecture from the [Lichfield Science & Engineering Society](http://www.lses.org.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk)‘s 2009/10 programme.

The chair of [Staffordshire Fungus Group](http://www.staffsfungi.org.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) (SFG), Camilla Lovett, will deliver her lecture The Weird and the Wonderful at the Lichfield Garrick Studio Theatre on September 17.

And then, to back-up the new-found knowledge, on September 27 at 10am, Camilla and Neville Walters, Secretary of the SFG, will lead people a Fungus Foray at Pipe Green, Lichfield, to find, observe and identify fungi in their natural habitat.

Camilla explained her love of all things fungi:

> “I was passionate about wild flowers whilst at primary school and during my university and college days took up botanical drawing in my spare time, choosing fungi as a special study. I couldn’t afford a camera and kept sketch books instead, which was more enlightening. My professional career was in education for some 30 years, initially teaching Rural Studies at secondary level. I taught almost every subject to every age-group in between bringing up a family and finding some spare time to concentrate on detailed paintings of fungi. But they lacked accurate naming and thus I started on the long and endless road to knowing more.

> “In those days there were no local fungus groups in the area so I restarted a previously failed Staffordshire Fungus Group in 1994, holding office as Chairperson or Secretary for 15 years.”

Admission to the lecture is £4 for visitors, free for students and members of the Lichfield Science & Engineering Society,  
the Burton-upon-Trent and District Engineering Society and the Stoke-on-Trent Association of Engineers. Tickets are not available in advance and visitors will need to pay on the door.
