# Extra £2million to help repair potholes across Staffordshire

An extra £2million of funding has been provided to help tackle the backlog of pothole repairs across Staffordshire.

The money has come from Government after an appeal by Staffordshire County Council to help repair the damage caused by the coldest December on record.

Cllr Mike Maryon sees the work of the pothole repair teams

Cllr Mike Maryon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

> “We have lobbied hard to secure extra Government funding to fight the affects of the severe weather on our roads. This work has had an impact and we have received confirmation that Staffordshire is to receive an extra £2 million of cash specifically for pothole repairs.

> “Our arguments have proved successful. Government has listened to our case that we are one of the largest counties in the country with over 2,000 miles of roads. Additionally 80 per cent of our roads are rural and more susceptible to pothole damage.”

The Government had already pledged £2million to tackle the problem of potholes, while the authority itself has invested a similar amount.

Cllr Maryon added:

> “People regularly tell us that the condition of local roads is their single biggest issue, which we committed an extra £2 million of county council funding last month.

> “Since the start of March, 10 dedicated crews have been out in force across the county carrying out permanent repairs. This additional Government funding will enable us to further increase our efforts and make a real impact on our roads.”

Around 2,000 repairs have already been made since the teams began work.
