Lichfield City were forced to work hard for a 1-0 victory at their near neighbours Shenstone in the Staffordshire Vase.

County Cup ground requirements mean that the game had to be played at the far-flung outpost of Darlaston Town on a surface which wasn’t suited to flowing football.

The hosts attacked down the steep hill in the first half with former Lichfield player Paul Gregory defying is advancing years to be a continual thorn in City’s side.

And it was Gregory who came closest to opening the scoring in the first period with Jonathan Huckfield getting a vital toe in as the Shenstone man prepared to fire home. The challenge came at a cost though, as Huckfield pulled is hamstring in the process and had to be replaced by Ashley Thompson.

The hosts also carved out two chances for Seb Finkle in the first half but he failed to test Craig Johnson in the City goal.

City just could not get going in the difficult conditions and the dogged hosts had much the better of the first half, with Lichfield counting themselves fortunate to go into the break on level terms.

Even with the benefit of the slope in the second period, Paul Holt’s men still couldn’t get out of first gear as Shenstone again went close, full back Adam Wall seeing his shot rattle back off the crossbar.

It looked like being one of those days for Lichfield when top scorer Liam Holt limped off with a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out for a few weeks.

Full-time came and the extra 30 minutes failed to bring a host of chances for either side until Lichfield’s Lewis Bourne waltzed into the box and went down appealing for a penalty. While the hosts waited for the referees decision, Lee Ashmore seized the initiative to slam home a powerful drive and secure an unlikely win for City.
