# Figures reveal almost 1,300 people applied for social housing

New figures have revealed that almost 1,300 people have applied for social housing in Lichfield and Burntwood during 2014/15 – but just 265 properties were let during the same period.

A report to Lichfield District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee for housing and health also showed that 22% of the 1,293 applicants had been on the list for more than a year.

But 6% had been waiting for more than two years.

The council admitted there was high interest in social housing properties in the Lichfield and Burntwood area.

The report said: “Two bedroom houses received the highest number of bids on average (54), followed by one bed flats (47 bids) and three bed houses (37 bids), which demonstrates a healthy demand for these type of units.

“Nearly half (48%) of lettings were two bedroomed properties, 35% were one bed and only 17% were three bed, demonstrating a low turnover of three bed family homes.”

The housing register is managed by Bromford on behalf of Lichfield District Council and saw a high number of applications from younger people – with more than half of those applying aged under 34.

The figures also reveal that 96% per cent of the 265 social housing properties let during the 2014/15 period went to people with a local connection.

UK citizens accounted for 1,230 of those who applied with other applicants coming from:

- Poland (40)
- Latvia (8)
- Lithuania (4)
- Bulgaria (3)
- Other (8)

The report will be discussed by the committee on Wednesday (June 3).
