Drivers in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned to take extra care as cold weather sweeps across the region.

Temperatures are set to drop with warnings of ice on roads across Staffordshire over the weekend.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging drivers to ensure they’re ready for challenging road conditions.

Rebecca Gill from the fire service said: “During these icy conditions it’s really important for drivers to take their time and take extra care – keep a safe distance away from the car in front of you and if conditions are treacherous it may be worth asking yourself if your journey is vital.

“Make sure your vehicle is free from snow and ice and the windows are free from condensation before setting of and that you have adequate equipment available, such as a scraper and de-icer.

“Excessive speeds are in general a contributing factor in the majority of road traffic collisions, so it is essential that people re-evaluate the speeds they drive at when roads are icy.

“We would also encourage vehicle owners to carry out winter checks on their cars, or ask a professional to do this for you. This includes checking the lights are clean and working as they should, checking the windscreen wiper blades and ensuring the washer bottle is filled with screenwash, check the brakes are working well and tyres are adequately inflated and at an appropriate tread depth.”
