# Food waste collections on track for 2026 start, council report says

WORK to roll out new food waste collections in Lichfield and Burntwood is on track, a council report has said.

A partnership between Lichfield District Council and Tamworth Borough Council is expecting to roll out the new service in 2026.

A report to a meeting of the Joint Waste committee said work was progressing ahead of the roll out, with ten collection vehicles expected to be delivered in February following a £1.2million investment.

It added:

> “The food waste caddies and liners procurement has also concluded.

> “Depot rearrangement is well underway to make space for the new vehicles and discussions are underway regarding utilising some space at the Tamworth depot.

> “A round review has indicated that there will be a need for day changes, but these should allow us to slightly reduce the number of rounds each day which could result in savings on staff.”

The report added that steps were being taken to ensure there were enough staff in place to deliver the new food waste collections.

> “We are working with HR to train and recruit drivers from within the existing team of loaders using post-entry training.

> “This will enable us to grow our team and ensure recruitment issues do not hamper launch, as this has been identified nationally as a significant risk.

> “We will carry out a loader recruitment drive in December and have no concerns about filling these roles.”

The report will be discussed at a meeting of the Joint Waste committee on 24th June.
