# Free Titanic show in Lichfield to help mark 100th anniversary

A free show in Lichfield reliving the sinking of the Titanic will form part of the nationwide events to mark the 100th anniversary of the maritime disaster.

The city, which is home to the famous statue of the ship’s captain EJ Smith, will play host to performers from the Liverpool Maritime Museum on February 1 at 7pm

A spokesperson said: “Events above and below deck on the night of April 14, 1912, will unfold as actress Emma Walmsley tells the story of the opulence of first class on the infamous ship in The Night the Lights Went Out.

“Emma plays Emily Broughton Williams, a first class passenger who recounts her experience while in a hotel room in New York, waiting to return home to England.

“In The Quartermasters Story which follows, Dave Brown will tell the story of Robert Hichens, the man steering the ship when it hit the fateful Iceberg.

“Hichens was surrounded by controversy through the subsequent inquires and throughout his life until his death in 1940.

“The audience will experience both the terror of the night as well as the real story of what happened on deck over the two short performances.”

Admission to the Lichfield Guildhall show is free, but availability is limited. Tickets can be collected in advance from the Lichfield City Council offices on Wade Street, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum on the Market Square, or Lichfield Tourist Information Centre in the Garrick theatre. Any remaining tickets will also be available on the door on the evening.
